We have made a lot of progress with the documentary project with Holgate School, we have had numerous meetings with Sarah Williams, Head of Diversity and Bob Beattie, a Senior member of the teaching staff with over 30 years spent at the school. Bob has a wonderful relationship with the pupils, he knows virtually every name and was able to suggest immediately who would be good candidates for interviewing, and for roles of crew members for the production.
In our meeting today we were able to speak with the Headteacher, Mr. Phillips. He is a nice bloke, warm and welcoming. He was pleasantly surprised when we explained the aims of the project, and was sure it would raise the profile of the work they are doing at the school.
We have another meeting lined up for next week, where we will be getting to know the crew we are hoping to use. We haven't met yet, but they are all in the 6th form and study Media, so they will be fairly apt at using a camera. Also next week, the school has a visit from two ex-miners from the local area as part of a year 7 History project. We have agreed to film the miners in an interview, enabling us to make sure the crew are up to the job. The school will get a copy of the raw footage, and a selection of clips. The clips will be given to all the Media students who will be prompted by their teacher to come up with their own edits as a small project.

Portfolio/Website
I have started looking into what i want for my portfolio/website, and have outlined a few key things i want it to have/include:
- Flash based interactive website/portfolio.
- simple, modern and stylish design.
- able to be used independently on CD/DVD (for distribution with my CV)
- includes my work inside uni, and externally, displayed in an intriguing, easy to navigate and above all, ORIGINAL manner .
- a suitable web address e.g. ryanjell.co.uk
In the coming weeks i will develop my ideas, and hopefully i will have decided what i want in the near future.

PRP Artefact One

The aim of this artefact is to gain an understanding of the use of audio in film in order to impose suspense upon the audience. I used Foley as a starting point, simply because when looking at creating suspense, less is usually more.
Using a clip from Assault On Precinct 13 (Jean-François Richet, 2005) I created several layers of audio including the sound of a heart beat and footsteps in the snow, then clipped and joined the video so that it flowed.
I recorded the audio using a dynamic microphone, the heart beat was my own, the mike pressed to my chest after doing some exercise. I also added some shuffling sounds using clothes on paper. The sound of the steps in the snow was created by pressing my hand into the icy build-up on the inside of a freezer.
The experiment was designed to find out how people reacted to the sounds in a physiological sense when coupled with video. I filmed three people as they watched and listened, and gave questionnaires to more people (which I will keep doing throughout the second term). This will enable me to get data regarding the initial reaction to stimulus, and also the afterthought of the participant.

Music Project- Outside University
I mentioned a while ago that i was working on some music outside of Uni with an MC from London. In recent weeks we have not been able to do much work due to time and location contraints, but yesterday we had a meeting and decided we had to take it a little bit more seriously. We agreed that Easter is a good time to sort out the majority of the work, because i will be living down in London for the Easter break.
If I can get the tracks layed out and mastered, by the time it comes to Easter the recording of vocals should be more simple, as long as the lyrics are how i want them and the quality is high.

Photography
A few weeks ago i acquired a fairly old, but fairly ok digital SLR. The resolution it offers is low in megapixels, but the lens makes up for that. I also got hold of a wide angle/fisheye lens, which is great fun.
I made an account on www.flickr.com this afternoon, so im going to store my half-decent work on to that just so i can get hold of it anywhere and link it to the web log.

Portfolio/Website
I have decided to make a website, i think its the best way for me to display my work and it will be advantageous as part of my CV for employers to look at. Its early days yet, but i hope to get one sorted out and online before the end of the term.

Client Project- Simulated Brief
Here it is, the simulated client project advert. Im quite happy with it, there are some good shots, good continuity and G did a great job, however, i think i let myself down with the pack shot at the end, you can see the tape marks on the plug and also the font is appauling-i dont know what i was thinking there. Overall a solid piece of work, just got to iron out those creases.

Client Project- Holgate School
The email i recieved from Sarah about the meeting this week, notice the 'VERY' they put on the agenda...makes me seem desperate.
Just to let you know that on the first Friday back (January 11th) we are having a Diversity meeting.
It starts at 12.40-1.20pm. I have included yourselves on the agenda so if you're happy to come in and hear about about our plans for other projects and also tell the staff a bit about yorselves and your ideas that would be great.
*Following the Stickman Project we are hoping to organise a joint venture with Djanogly.
*Global awareness fortnight is going to be from February 25th to March 9th. We would like to work towards becoming a Fairtrade school and need to discuss how we could facilitate this.
*We have some Media Students from NTU who are VERY keen to work with our students to create a film/documentary about the school,it's history and the Diversity work that is developing throughout the school.
